Everyone Can Benefit from an Eye Movement Evaluation

Dear Floy,
"It is amazing, thank you so much! You
have answered the questions no one
else has been able to, we finally have
the answers for Paul's reading problems."

Hundreds of parents have come to me and learned the "real reason" their child struggles to read.  This ends the frustration for parents and child because finally they see improvement in reading and homework. The icing on the cake is as one mom put it is "Now that we know the real problem the turmoil during homework has ended.  Working with you my son is reading better each day and he has his self esteem back."

Today a simple and quick eye movement screening is giving parents and students the answers they have been seeking.  It can help answer the question, “is it a reading problem or a visual problem?"  What we often discover is that the reading problem may not have anything to do with a persons effort or intelligence but instead it is because of eye movement problems.

Even with 20/20 vision poor eye coordination can be the reason someone is having trouble reading.   Our vision is the link to learning and memory. By "fine tuning" the visual processing system using simple and fun exercises the brain and eyes work together more successfully.

This visual evaluation records how a person’s eyes move.  It only takes a few minutes. This is not an eye examination. An individual wears a pair of goggles with infrared sensors which measure eye movement as they read a short paragraph of words or numbers.  With this recording eye movement problems can be discovered immediately.

Many people have eye coordination problems, but don’t know it.  In fact, headaches are often a symptom of a visual problem but most people don't know this either. They just assumed that the headaches they get when reading are normal for everyone.  Annual eye exams don’t diagnose these problems unless the exam is done by a Behavioral Optometrist.

One of the biggest differences I have seen in the students who have been screened and gotten help for their poor eye coordination is their change in attitude. They are more confident in the classroom because they understand that their reading problem is linked to a vision problem.  They learn that it isn't "them" but their eyes which are the problem.

Some states have a law which requires all children get a full eye examination within six months of entering kindergarten, but parents can opt out of the exam. So children who do have eye coordination problems might slip through the cracks because it most likely will not include an eye movement recording.

It can be an enormous relief for parents and students to finally know the real reason causing the reading difficulties and what can be done to improve the ease of reading.
